Mauritius lifted the night curfew that had been in place since 12 October, officials announced on Monday, citing a "favourable evolution of the situation".
The curfew ended at 4:30 a.m. on 19 October, and authorities said roads are open, schools have resumed classes and daily life is back on track, according to a statement from Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s office and a confirmation by Mauritius Tours.
Unrest began last week over water shortages and rising living costs, escalating after a police officer shot a woman during a rally on Saturday. The violence led to at least 188 arrests on charges such as looting, arson, damage to police stations and possession of explosives. The officer who shot the woman was arrested and taken to court.
The British government updated its travel advice, urging visitors to avoid demonstrations and follow local authority instructions.
