AI‑generated images of alleged Paris robbery debunked after viral spread

France 24’s Observers used SynthID to confirm the images were AI‑generated, and no police report verifies the alleged assault.

France 24’s Observers reported that two AI‑generated photos claiming to show an elderly couple in their 80s being “stripped and robbed” during the October 17 riots in Paris have been shared millions of times on X, especially by far‑right accounts.

The images were traced to a montage posted late on October 17 by the pro‑Israel account Infos‑Israel.news. Using Google’s SynthID watermark detector, the Observers identified the pictures as created with OpenAI tools. Visual anomalies – a four‑fingered hand, duplicated masked heads and a non‑Parisian bollard – further indicated manipulation.

Despite the viral spread, the alleged assault remains unverified. French journalist Dominique Rizet said on BFM TV that a police source confirmed an attack on an elderly couple in Paris at 8:47 pm on Saturday, but no official police report or photographs have been released. CheckNews of Libération contacted the Paris prosecutor’s office for confirmation, but the office has not corroborated the claim.

Far‑right users on X described the images as “the most horrific image of October 17th” and linked the alleged attack to anti‑Muslim, anti‑Jewish and anti‑Western rhetoric. American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones shared one image, blaming a “criminal consortium of Muslims and communists.” The images also appeared on French digital outlet Sirenes (Instagram) and Israeli right‑wing channel C14, which ran the headline “Islam Conquers Europe.”

France 24’s Observers, with help from the European Broadcasting Union’s Spotlight network and Belgium’s RTBF fact‑checking team, confirmed the AI origin and warned that the false visual narrative fuels inflammatory claims about the riots.
