Baby‑naming specialist Colleen Slagen, who posts as “namingbebe” on Instagram, is urging parents to consider the name Mamie, which ranked 6,250th on the U.S. Social Security Administration list for 2025 with only 19 registrations.
In a video shared on the Today Show’s website, Slagen said Mamie historically served as a nickname for Mary or Margaret and means “pearl.” She added that it could also derive from Marie, Marian, Marguerite or Matilda Marie.
Slagen noted the name’s French meaning of “grandma” but argued that other grandmother‑style names like Poppy and Gigi remain popular for children. She predicts that increased exposure will spark “name envy.”
