Palestinian freelance photographer Mahmoud Abu Hamda was awarded the Bayeux war photography prize for correspondents and the Public’s Choice award for his series “What War Leaves Behind,” the Daily Times reported on 12 October 2026.
Based in the Gaza Strip, Abu Hamda submitted previously unpublished photographs that document daily life after Israel’s military offensive that followed Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack. He could not travel to Bayeux, north‑western France, but addressed the ceremony via video, saying the international reach of his work was a major achievement.
He noted, “My greatest honour is that these photos have been able to leave the borders of Gaza.” The awards ceremony also recognised The Washington Post, NPR and CNN in other categories, while veteran BBC war correspondent Lyse Doucet chaired the jury.
