Luke Evans says several Hollywood actors remain closeted

Evans, who came out early in his career, says many gay actors stay hidden in an industry that offers little guidance.

Actor Luke Evans told The Telegraph that he knows “several actors” in Hollywood who have chosen to keep their sexuality private. Evans, 47, said being one of the few openly gay performers early in his career was difficult and that the industry remains "very insular".

He explained, “You never know what a person has gone through. You don’t know what their family feels or how hard they’ve fought to get a career in the first place.” Evans added that no one in Hollywood offers guidance on coming out, leaving actors to navigate the process alone.

When asked if a gay actor could ever be cast as James Bond, Evans said he had been “on the list for Bond for a good decade” but now feels he is “too old” for the role. He cited his own background as a former Jehovah’s Witness who left his religion at 16 to pursue acting, describing bullying and a search for identity during his teenage years.
