Louis Garrel has been announced as the lead in Marco Bellocchio’s upcoming biopic “Falcon,” playing John Elkann, the heir to Italy’s Agnelli family that controls Fiat. The film, which focuses on former Fiat‑Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne (portrayed by Pierfrancesco Favino), is currently filming in Toronto and will be sold internationally by RAI Cinema International.

What happened

“Falcon” dramatizes Marchionne’s 2004 appointment by the Agnelli family to rescue Fiat from near‑bankruptcy, his aggressive restructuring, and the 2009 merger with Chrysler that created the world’s seventh‑largest automaker. The synopsis describes Marchionne as “ruthless and visionary,” teaching a young Elkann the “art of command” while battling General Motors and Chrysler. The film also depicts the U.S. Treasury’s acceptance of Marchionne’s offer to take over Chrysler during a government‑led bankruptcy.

What the reports add

Variety notes that the cast includes Benedetta Cimatti, Barbara Ronchi and a cameo by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. Production credits list Simone Gattoni (Kavac Film), Mattia Mor (Emotion Network and RAI Cinema) and collaboration with Stla Europe. The screenplay was written by Bellocchio with Ludovica Rampoldi, Andrea di Stefano, Stefano Rulli and Oliviero Del Papa.

What was said

The promotional material states: “Marchionne became very important and famous overseas,” and adds that “the miracle exacted a devastating price,” highlighting the psychological toll on the visionary executive.

How it came about

Bellocchio, 86, is described as the most prominent living Italian director of the post‑1960s generation.
