Los Angeles County has begun mailing vote‑by‑mail ballots as the November 3 general election approaches, the county election office said on Monday. The move kicks off the final month of a campaign that includes the mayoral race between incumbent Karen Bass and City Council member Nithya Raman, a contest for California governor, congressional seats and eight local ballot measures.
More than 400 ballot drop boxes will be available across the county, and vote‑by‑mail ballots are being delivered to registered voters. Voters who have not yet registered and wish to receive a ballot by mail must do so by October 19, according to the county’s timeline. Vote centers, which allow in‑person voting and ballot drop‑off, are scheduled to open on October 24.
The ballot distribution comes amid a statewide debate over election security. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli has voiced concerns about the integrity of California’s vote‑by‑mail system, including ballot handling and voter verification. State officials and voting‑rights advocates, however, have defended the existing safeguards, saying the system remains secure despite the high volume of mail‑in ballots.
Among the measures on the ballot are proposals that would affect taxes, wildfire recovery funding and the operation of City Hall. The county’s election office highlighted five of these measures as having significant fiscal or land‑use implications.
Los Angeles voters can track the progress of the election and find detailed information about each contest on the county’s official website.
