Critics claim NY Attorney General Letitia James biased in Cornell rape probe
Republican critics say the appointment of Letitia James as special prosecutor in the Cornell assault case raises concerns about impartiality.

Republican officials and other critics allege that New York Attorney General Letitia James is politically biased and therefore unable to fairly investigate the seven Cornell University fraternity members accused of raping a female classmate, according to the New York Post.
James posted sympathy for the alleged victim on social media before Governor Kathy Hochul appointed her on October 1, 2026, as special prosecutor in the case. She has not commented on accusations of bias.
Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin, who was previously indicted by James on grand‑larceny and election‑fraud charges in 2021 but later acquitted, warned the “Cornell Seven” to “expect the worst,” calling James “anything but impartial.” He added that she has engaged in “targeted persecutions and prosecutions.”
City Councilman Frank Morano (R‑Staten Island) said James spent over $1 million trying to “nail” him on unrelated matters and suggested she would try to “nail these guys rather than let justice prevail.” Council Minority Leader David Carr echoed the concern, noting James has a “well‑documented history of making highly charged public statements about people she is investigating and prosecuting.”
Former President Donald Trump also predicted the accused would not receive a “fair shake” under James, labeling her a “corrupt person.” The criticism comes as the case gained national attention after a “Jane Doe” filed a lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court in September 2026, alleging the assault occurred at Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024.
James previously won a $454 million civil judgment against Trump’s business, which was later overturned by a state appeals court, adding to the political backdrop of the current controversy.
