John Mayer confirmed Thursday that he is launching his own record label, Sob Rock Records, in partnership with Universal Music Group’s Mercury Records. The label’s first release, the single “Tom and Jerry,” is scheduled for Oct. 23.
What happened
Mayer announced the formation of Sob Rock Records, named after his 2021 album “Sob Rock.” The imprint will operate alongside Mercury Records, a unit of Universal Music Group. No album has been detailed, but the single “Tom and Jerry” will arrive at digital service providers at midnight as Thursday turns into Friday.
What the reports add
Variety noted that Mayer’s last major label contract ended with Sony Music in 2022 and that the new label follows a hint earlier this year that new studio recordings were forthcoming. The Hollywood Reporter added that Mayer’s departure from Columbia Records in 2022 marked a “momentous shift” in his career and listed other Mercury artists such as Noah Kahan and Morgan Wallen.
What was said
“Working with Tyler Arnold and the talented team at Mercury Records has already proven to be a great partnership,” Mayer said in a statement, according to both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Mercury’s chairman‑CEO Tyler Arnold said, “John Mayer is one of the greatest artists of all time, and I couldn’t be prouder to welcome him to Mercury Records. We’re excited to be part of his next chapter and to partner with his label, Sob Rock Records, to help bring his creative vision to life.”
How it came about
Mayer’s split from Sony/Columbia in 2022 left him without a label home, a development reported in earlier coverage. After hinting at new recordings earlier this year, the launch of Sob Rock Records formalises his return to releasing new music. The move mirrors recent artist‑led label launches such as Gunna’s SB The Label, which Felo covered on Oct. 9 (see article).
