John Cena told host Josh Horowitz on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast that he understands why James Gunn is no longer treating "Peacemaker" as a top priority. Cena said, “You need a different guy in this chair,” referring to Gunn’s broader responsibilities at DC Studios.
He recalled that Gunn wrote the series after finishing "Guardians of the Galaxy" and during a lull caused by COVID, then moved on to co‑lead DC Studios with Peter Safran. After the Paramount‑Warner Bros. Discovery merger created Skydance Corp., Gunn and Safran were tasked with overseeing high‑value properties such as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, which Cena said explains the shift.
Cena added that he will wear the Peacemaker helmet as long as Gunn needs him, but he is also starring in the new film "Matchbox: The Movie," released on Apple TV.
