Jamie Dornan told Italian magazine L'Officiel that playing Aragorn in the upcoming prequel The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum carries a weight of expectation, adding that he will not try to outdo Viggo Mortensen.

What happened

The prequel, set between The Hobbit trilogy and The Fellowship of the Ring, follows a younger Aragorn as he tracks Gollum. Dornan confirmed his casting in interviews reported by Variety and The Independent. The film is directed by Andy Serkis, who also provides the voice and motion capture for Gollum and serves as the main director for the first time on a Middle‑Earth entry. Returning cast members include Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, with newcomers Kate Winslet, Leo Woodall, Lee Pace and Anya Taylor‑Joy joining the ensemble.

What the reports add

Variety noted that Serkis previously acted as second‑unit director on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy and highlighted his other directorial work on Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The Independent added that the screenplay is written by an unnamed team and reiterated the returning actors. Both outlets quoted Dornan’s remarks verbatim, though the Independent’s piece repeats the same statements without additional detail.

What was said

"There’s pressure when you’re trying to follow in those footsteps," Dornan said, as reported by Variety and The Independent. He continued, "I’ve been asked to play a super‑iconic role, and I’ll do my best. But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo. His performance is one of my all‑time favorites, and I feel honored to try to recapture at least some of the energy he originally brought to the character. There’s no part of me that’s trying to outdo him."

How it came about

Andy Serkis’s involvement links the new film to the broader Middle‑Earth franchise, following his work on the original trilogies and his recent directorial projects. Felo News previously covered the expansion of Tolkien adaptations with the Season 3 trailer for The Rings of Power, which highlighted new storylines set after the fall of Eregion. Dornan’s casting continues the trend of high‑profile actors joining new Tolkien‑related productions.
