Indonesia’s Ministry of Immigration and Corrections suspended five officials, including the chief of Cibinong prison, after a surprise inspection uncovered a luxury apartment‑style compound used by inmates.
The discovery was made on September 23 during an unannounced visit by the country’s Ombudsman, which found more than ten separate units equipped with air‑conditioners, large‑screen televisions, refrigerators, sofas, dining areas, a gym and a golf‑simulator under construction.
Rudi Setiawan, inspector general of the ministry, announced the suspensions on Tuesday, saying the officials were “suspected of being responsible for the incident uncovered by the Ombudsman.”
Ombudsman member Syafrida Rachmawati Rasahan told a news conference that investigators had encountered inmates inside the residential compound and that the facilities resembled homestays, apartments and villas rather than standard prison housing.
