Switzerland and Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka confirmed on Thursday that a Swiss court sentenced him to two years’ probation after he admitted to obtaining a fraudulent Covid‑19 vaccination certificate. In an Instagram post, the 34‑year‑old said he accepts the decision and takes responsibility.

The sentence includes a suspended fine of 150,000 Swiss francs (£136,000) and court fees, which Xhaka says he has already paid. He missed four Nations League matches while cooperating with prosecutors in Lucerne, who are also investigating a local doctor. Swiss football president Peter Knabel noted that Xhaka’s withdrawal from the squad was a joint decision and that the team will reassess his involvement after the current international window.

Xhaka is set to return to Sunderland this weekend for the club’s match against Brighton at the Stadium of Light.
