Google unveils Gemini 4 Carbon, its newest frontier AI model

The model, announced on Oct. 28, builds on Gemini 4 Argon and shows gains in vulnerability detection and code safety.

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on Oct. 28, positioning it as the company’s latest frontier AI model that improves on the recently released Gemini 4 Argon.

What happened

In a blog post published Oct. 28, Google DeepMind’s senior vice‑president Koray Kavukcuoglu described Carbon as the strongest model in the Gemini series. The announcement came two weeks after Gemini 4 Argon was opened to developers on Oct. 13. Google said the new model is being rolled out to a small group of cybersecurity defenders, with no public release date announced.

What the reports add

Ars Technica reported that Google claims Carbon achieves a “significant leap” in vulnerability detection, validation and remediation, and that it is twice as likely to generate code free of vulnerabilities compared with Argon. The outlet also noted a 10‑fold improvement in generating high‑quality patches, according to the Chrome team, and an 89‑point rise on the WebDev Arena leaderboard, placing Carbon at number four.

Mashable added that Carbon now leads the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, surpassing Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5. The article placed the announcement in the context of a rapid release cadence: Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on Sept. 22, OpenAI shipped GPT‑6 Astra earlier in the month, and Google launched Argon on Sept. 30 before making it available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on Oct. 13.

What was said

Koray Kavukcuoglu told Mashable that Carbon is Google’s “strongest model yet” and highlighted its strengths in cybersecurity and long‑horizon tasks. Ars Technica quoted Google’s internal statements that the model shows a “significant leap” in vulnerability detection and that the Chrome team claims a ten‑times improvement in high‑quality patch generation.

How it came about

The Gemini 4 Carbon announcement follows Google’s earlier rollout of Gemini 4 Argon, detailed in Felo’s Oct. 14 article Google rolls out Gemini 4 Argon AI model for developers and enterprises. Argon introduced support for up to 1 million output tokens and an introductory pricing plan that ends on Nov. 30. At the same time, Google launched the Connected Apps Platform (Google opens Gemini and Search to third‑party apps via Connected Apps Platform) and added Personal Intelligence features for cars (Google adds Personal Intelligence to Gemini AI for cars). These initiatives illustrate Google’s broader strategy of expanding Gemini’s capabilities across developers, enterprise users and consumer devices while retaining tight control over access to its most advanced models.
