Flydubai incident highlights why UAE carriers add extra pilots on long routes
The September 30 diversion of flydubai flight FZ1073 to Tabuk has put a spotlight on regulatory and operational reasons for deploying additional crew on long‑haul flights.

Flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 bound for Tel Aviv, was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on September 30 after an altercation on the flight deck, according to the airline and aviation analysts cited by Khaleej Times.
UAE and global airlines typically add a third or fourth pilot on routes that exceed eight to ten hours of flight time, or when pilots need to be repositioned, because duty‑time limits and fatigue‑management rules would otherwise be breached. Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at StrategicAero Research, explained that the decision is “regulatory, mathematical and operational – not discretionary.” He said the UAE does not require a second pair of pilots on every flight, and the practice has not been introduced since the February 28 US‑Israel‑Iran conflict began.
Airlines model the entire duty period, including pre‑flight reporting, flight time, post‑flight duties, delays and contingency buffers. If the total exceeds the permitted duty period for two pilots, a third must be added; if it exceeds the limit for three, a fourth is required. Adding extra crew to short‑haul flights would impose a “major burden” because of high salaries and existing pilot shortages, Ahmad warned.
The GCAA and flydubai CEO Ghaigh Al Ghaith praised the quick response of off‑duty Indian pilot Captain Smit Matchhar and other crew members who helped control the situation, noting that the swift intervention prevented more serious repercussions.
