Nestlé India says low‑fat dairy whitener meets safety standards after FSSAI flags sample

The company argues the regulator’s test ignored naturally occurring phosphorus in milk‑based products.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Nestlé India stated that its low‑fat dairy whitener is safe and complies with all regulatory limits, after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) lab report labelled a sample as “substandard” and “unsafe.”

What happened

The FSSAI disclosed that the sample was taken from Bharat Hotels Ltd, which runs The Lalit hotel at Connaught Place, New Delhi. The regulator’s laboratory report found the product non‑compliant under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006, and issued a notice to the hotel to stop selling the product, allowing an appeal within the prescribed period.

What was said

“Our product is in full compliance for added phosphorus as per prescribed limits under FSSR, including on an as‑consumed basis,” a Nestlé India spokesperson told New Indian Express. The spokesperson added that phosphorus is a natural nutrient in milk and therefore present in all milk‑based products.
