FDA finds mold and bugs at two Chinese factories making GLP‑1 weight‑loss drug ingredients
The inspections uncovered mold, insects and document‑shuffling at facilities tied to unapproved GLP‑1 weight‑loss drug production.

FDA inspectors reported "gross contamination" at two Chinese factories that compound active ingredients for GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs, according to a Bloomberg report cited by the New York Post.
What happened
Inspectors examined a plant run by Chengdu Shengnuo Biopharm Co and found bugs in the ceiling and moldy floors. When the team arrived, employees were pouring product samples into sinks in what appeared to be a coordinated effort. At the same time, staff at Nanjing Chengong Pharmaceutical Co were allegedly relabeling active ingredients bought from other factories with their own seal of approval, without reviewing safety documentation. Both companies have been placed on the FDA’s import list, meaning their products could be seized at U.S. borders.
What the reports add
The Post notes that documents obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request showed employees moving lab paperwork into lockers and a different room, and that inspectors could not recover all records. Bloomberg is cited as saying the actual drugs were not tested, and that the two firms produce semaglutide and tirzepatide – the ingredients in Novo Nordisk’s and Eli Lilly’s blockbuster weight‑loss medicines.
What was said
Michael Rogers, a former FDA investigator, told Bloomberg the findings “suggest a serious accident waiting to happen.” The Post reports that Chengdu Shengnuo Biopharm Co, in a filing with Chinese authorities, claimed it is “diligently implementing effective measures” to correct the problems.
