Europe’s Summer 2026 Heat Stress Hits Over Half the Continent

Copernicus data show more than half of Europe endured extreme heat stress during the hottest summer on record for western Europe.

EU climate monitoring service Copernicus reported that 52% of Europe experienced "very strong" heat stress – feel‑like temperatures above 38 °C – during the exceptionally hot summer of 2026, according to Gulf News.

What happened

The continent endured a series of heatwaves that began unusually early in spring, shattering temperature records and causing tens of thousands of excess deaths. Around 80% of Europe faced "strong" heat stress (feel‑like temperatures over 32 °C) for a record 41 days by the end of the season. Drought affected almost half of Europe by late August, lowering river flows to their lowest since 1992 and straining irrigation, freight transport, nuclear cooling and hydropower.

What was said

"One of the things that stands out for 2026 is that the heat was not only remarkable for its intensity, but also for its geographical extent," said Samantha Burgess, Climate Lead at the European Centre for Medium‑Range Weather Forecasts, quoted by Gulf News. She added that heat stress is becoming both more widespread and more persistent, making it the leading cause of weather‑related mortality worldwide.
