A coroner in the United Arab Emirates has ruled that Cassius Newton, 34, the son of former Chelsea footballer Eddie Newton, died on July 18 during a desert hike in Wadi Naqab, Dubai, after disregarding his wife's plea not to go.
Newton, a non‑league player living in Ras Al Khaimah, told his wife early on the day of the trek that he intended to hike. She warned him that temperatures could reach about 40 °C (104 °F) and that the heat in the canyon would feel even higher. The coroner, Michelle Brown, said the pair’s deaths were the result of an "intentional trip" that turned fatal.
Rescuers found Newton and his friend Aran Martinson, 33, from Essex, dead on their backs in the mountainous region of Wadi Naqab. Both were taken to a hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, where they were pronounced dead later that day. The coroner attributed the deaths to organ failure caused by severe heat stress and exposure.
Tributes poured in from Newton’s former clubs, including Blackfield & Langley FC and Eastleigh FC, which expressed deep sympathy for the family. Friends described Newton as a talented young player whose loss was "absolutely devastating".
