Dubai Municipality unveiled a 2040 urban‑greening roadmap that targets the planting of roughly 3.5 million trees and the expansion of green areas to 187 square kilometres.
What happened
During a virtual session titled “Dubai Municipality and Life in Dubai 2033” at the Mohammed bin Rashid Leadership Forum, Director General Marwan bin Ghalita outlined the targets. The plan also calls for 11 square metres of green space per resident and aims to draw 95 million annual park visitors.
What the reports add
The announcement highlighted additional sustainability measures: inspecting more than 577,000 food consignments each year, ensuring 40 percent of new buildings use smart construction technologies by 2033, and diverting all waste from landfills. A Dh30 billion “Tasreef” drainage project is slated to boost rain‑water capacity by 700 percent, handling over 20 million cubic metres daily.
What was said
“Swift decision‑making, the ability to understand and anticipate the future, and transform needs and challenges into exceptional projects are what have distinguished Dubai as a model city of the future,” bin Ghalita told the forum, as reported by Khaleej Times.
How it came about
The roadmap follows earlier Dubai initiatives such as the flame‑tree planting drive announced in September and the smart‑building plan revealed on 13 October, both covered by Felo News.
