Northern Ireland Secretary urges compromise as Drumcree standoff enters third day

Sir Chris Bryant and Ireland’s foreign minister call for mediation and renewed talks amid a three‑day standoff over the Drumcree parade.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Sir Chris Bryant, Northern Ireland Secretary, urged all sides to "double down on compromise" as the Drumcree parade dispute entered its third day in Portadown, according to the Standard. The standoff centres on the Orange Order’s planned march along Garvaghy Road, a route opposed by nationalist residents and protesters.

Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee said an international mediator was "likely" to be appointed, while First Minister Michelle O’Neill declined to answer an urgent oral question in the Assembly on Monday, prompting the question to be rescheduled for Tuesday.

Orange Order members remain at Drumcree Church awaiting permission to start the parade, while protesters block the road, insisting the march should not proceed. Talks are expected to resume on Tuesday after a day of discussions at Hillsborough Castle and heated exchanges in the Assembly.

Speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, Bryant said the government would "bring both sides together" and "bridge sectarian divides". He added he would leave the conference early to return to Northern Ireland, emphasizing the need for calm and engagement from all communities.
