US officials warn drivers of heightened deer‑collision risk during fall rut

State Farm data and wildlife agencies say deer activity spikes in autumn, raising the chance of fatal collisions.

US authorities are urging motorists to be extra vigilant as deer enter their annual mating season, a period officials say raises the risk of serious road collisions. The Independent reported that State Farm’s analysis shows drivers face a 1 in 145 chance of striking an animal, with more than 1.6 million animal‑collision claims filed nationwide between July 2025 and June 2026, deer topping the list.

Peak risk occurs during November, October and December, when deer are most active at dawn and dusk. West Virginia, Montana and Wisconsin rank highest for animal‑related crashes, while New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection notes the “fall rut” runs from mid‑late October through mid‑December. Assistant commissioner Dave Golden said, “Collisions with deer pose a very serious safety threat and can cause significant damage to vehicles and possible loss of life.”

Officials advise drivers to slow down, watch for crossing signs and use high beams after dark. If a collision cannot be avoided, they warn against swerving, as sudden maneuvers increase the likelihood of fatal outcomes. The warning comes as suburban development pushes human habitats closer to deer corridors, further amplifying the danger.
