Study shows US chief marketing officers stay in role an average of three years, shorter than CEOs

The Findem‑CMO Huddles analysis links shorter CMO tenures to ownership structure and operating‑design challenges.

A new Findem × CMO Huddles study of more than 13,000 U.S. chief marketing officers finds that median CMO tenure has dropped to roughly three years, considerably shorter than the average CEO tenure.

The research, released on 30 September 2026, compares two cohorts: CMOs who began in 2010 held their posts for a median of four years, while those starting in 2022 average 2.6 years. Among incumbents, the median current tenure is 36 months, with 30 % serving less than 18 months and 33 % lasting five years or more.

Ownership appears decisive. Public‑company CMOs average four years in role, compared with 3.1 years at private‑equity‑backed firms and 2.6 years at venture‑capital‑backed firms. Public‑company CMOs also enjoy a 54 % longer current‑role tenure than their VC‑backed peers.

"The CMO role has become the pressure cooker of the C‑suite," said Drew Neisser, CEO of CMO Huddles, as reported by BizCommunity. Liv Anderman, CMO of Findem, added that the churn reflects operating‑design issues, noting that unclear mandates and limited runway often force companies to restart the search for a marketing leader.
