On Sunday night around 9:45 p.m., a masked trio assaulted 32‑year‑old cyclist Katherine Marroquin in Central Park near East 90th Street and the East Drive, according to the New York Post.
Marroquin, a Bronx resident who was biking home from an Upper West Side maintenance‑worker job, stopped to retrieve dropped AirPods. The attackers cornered her, demanded her belongings and repeatedly struck her on the head while she clutched her bike. They snatched her phone from the front of the bike and tossed it into the lake, then grabbed her backpack and continued to hit and kick her.
During the assault, a Stanley metal water tumbler fell out of Marroquin’s bag. She grabbed the cup and used it to strike the assailants, saying, “When I saw the cup, the first thing I did was like, ‘Well, they’re gonna kill me,’ so I grabbed the cup and I just randomly hit everywhere.” The trio fled on foot toward Fifth Avenue and had not been caught by Monday.
Police believe the three suspects are in their early twenties. Marroquin lost her phone, a wallet containing $80, credit cards and Beats headphones, but said the tumbler was the only reason the attackers did not take everything. She was bruised, with purple marks on her face and hands, but declined medical attention when police arrived.
Marroquin reported waking up with soreness and said, “I am thankful that I am OK,” adding that some victims “get hit in the head and never wake up.” Despite the injuries, she returned to work the next day and said she will continue biking, noting she avoids the train because she does not feel safe on it.
