Leevi Meriläinen, claimed off waivers from Ottawa a week ago, will make his first Vancouver Canucks start on Saturday night wearing a new mask that pays tribute to former Canucks goaltender John Garrett, Daily Hive reported.
The black, red and gold mask incorporates the Vancouver skyline, the team’s orca logo in skate colours, and a lower‑left illustration of Garrett’s classic mask. Kevin Woodley of InGoal Magazine highlighted the mix of matte and glossy finishes in a close‑up view shared on Twitter.
Garrett, who retired in 2016 and later spent 40 years as a colour commentator for Sportsnet, died in April 2026. Former teammates Dan Murphy, John Shorthouse and Ray Ferraro honoured him during the Canucks’ home opener, and Murphy noted Meriläinen will also wear Garrett’s former number 31.
