Flores lawyers cite newly released Raiders memo as evidence of NFL racial bias

The memo, obtained by Front Office Sports, describes former Dolphins coach Brian Flores in language the lawyers deem racially offensive.

Brian Flores' legal team has pointed to a recently unsealed scouting memo as further proof of racial prejudice within the NFL, Sportskeeda reported.

What happened

Front Office Sports disclosed a recruiting report prepared by Korn Ferry for the Las Vegas Raiders that evaluated former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores. The document, dated sometime after Flores' 2022 dismissal, includes a passage that calls him “polished and a good presenter despite growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn (same as Mike Tyson).” It also notes his friendship with a billionaire’s son as a factor in his networking opportunities.

What the report adds

The memo not only praises Flores but also lists negative traits, describing him as potentially “a dictator with players, coaches, and can even be difficult with ownership,” and alleging he once threatened violence toward a general manager. The same source indicates a senior executive labeled Flores “the worst hiring decision we’ve ever made.”

What was said

Michael Willemin, representing Flores, called the language “racially offensive,” saying it implies surprise at a Black man being articulate. Douglas H. Wigdor, another attorney, said the memo illustrates “unfortunate, but unsurprising realities” that Black coaches face, including retaliation for challenging systemic discrimination. Both comments were quoted by Sportskeeda.

How it came about

Flores sued the Dolphins, five other teams and the NFL in 2022 alleging racial discrimination. The newly released memo, surfacing more than four years later, is being used by his lawyers to argue that bias persists in hiring practices across the league.
