BJP announces nationwide protests against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remarks on Modi’s late father

The party says the remarks were indecent, offensive and a personal attack on the Prime Minister’s family.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it will stage protests at all state headquarters on Monday, Oct. 26, in response to comments made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father, according to statements posted on the party’s X account and reported by india.com and Times Now News.

What happened

Kharge’s remark was delivered during a programme in Patna, Bihar, where he responded to an audience member’s comment with the phrase “Modi ka baap bhi jayega.” The BJP described the statement as “insulting, indecent and offensive” and announced that party workers will gather at state offices across India to demonstrate against what it calls “gaali politics.” The Delhi BJP unit plans to hold its rally around noon.

What the reports add

India.com quoted a BJP X post that said the language used by Kharge “has turned into that of a mafia” and that the party’s protests would be “peaceful but firm.” Times Now News added that the BJP’s statement called the remarks an “attack on the dignity of the Prime Minister’s family” and said the demonstrations would be aimed at opposing Congress’s alleged use of vulgar language.

What was said

“The language that was once associated with thugs and hooligans is now being used by the Congress President himself… Their entire style of functioning has turned into that of a mafia,” the BJP said on X, as reported by india.com.

“In protest against the insulting, indecent, and offensive remarks made by the Congress national president in Patna regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's late father, the BJP will stage strong demonstrations tomorrow (Monday) across all state headquarters in the country,” the BJP statement read, according to Times Now News.

How it came about

The controversy follows a series of BJP‑Congress confrontations in recent weeks, including the BJP Mahila Morcha’s protest outside Congress headquarters on Oct. 13 (see Felo coverage) and earlier Congress‑led protests demanding the resignation of the chief election commissioner. The party’s decision to mobilise workers nationwide reflects its strategy of counter‑protesting Congress actions ahead of the upcoming state elections.
