On Sunday, over 100 people were detained in two separate protests in Chennai, one organized by the SFI and DYFI near Saidapet and another by the May 17 Movement in T Nagar, according to the New Indian Express.
Both protests expressed solidarity with the Cockroach Janta Party’s demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while the May 17 Movement also raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Tamil Nadu.
Modi, speaking at a golden‑jubilee event for Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya at the Chennai Trade Centre, began his address with an apology for arriving late, citing programme delays. Around 500 students attended the ceremony.
The detained protesters were released later that evening.
