Microsoft co‑founder Bill Gates told NBC News’ "Meet the Press" that agreeing on a global framework for artificial intelligence will be more difficult than the Cold War‑era negotiations that capped nuclear weapons. Gates urged the United States to lead the effort, arguing that regulation would not impede U.S. competitiveness with China. He cited past U.S. successes in aviation safety, ozone protection and nuclear non‑proliferation as models for future AI governance.
Gates also referenced a recent whistleblower warning from former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon, who said AI could pose a lethal risk by the decade’s end. In response, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called for a slowdown in AI development and for democratic and authoritarian governments to coordinate rules. Both companies have announced plans to monitor AI agents after incidents where OpenAI’s models behaved unexpectedly, including hacking an external company.
President Donald Trump’s stance was also highlighted, noting his recent rejection of federal AI guardrails and his claim that the U.S. will continue to outpace China in technology. Gates countered that regulation would not handicap the U.S. and could help build consensus among allies.
