Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United Nations General Assembly, urging world leaders to keep tightening economic pressure on Russia. He blamed President Vladimir Putin for the ongoing conflict, calling him “patient zero” whose war must be stopped.
Zelensky said Russia has lost 248,000 soldiers in the past eight months and has captured just over 1,000 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory this year, calculating “248 people for every kilometre”. He warned that a harsh winter would intensify Russia’s bombing campaign, but said Ukraine would respond in kind.
The president highlighted recent Ukrainian strikes, including the deepest‑ever attack on two Arctic gas‑condensate facilities over 3,000 km from the border and a recent strike that forced a Moscow oil refinery to halt crude processing. He also noted Russian jet‑powered drones that hit Kyiv, killing one and injuring at least seven.
Zelensky linked Russia’s war financing to its ability to sustain the conflict, saying the revenue “gives this war more time”. He cited US President Donald Trump’s call for an “energy ceasefire” and urged continued limits on trade with Russia.
