The YSR Congress Party says TDP workers attacked candidates and tore nomination papers in five towns ahead of municipal elections.

Vijayawada – The YSR Congress Party (YSRC) lodged four complaints with the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission on Oct. 17, alleging that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers used violence and intimidation to block its candidates from filing nominations for municipal elections in Kadapa, Tirupati, Rayachoti, Rajampeta and Darsi.

According to the YSRC state general secretary and MLC Lella Appi Reddy, TDP workers surrounded nomination centres in Kadapa, tore nomination papers in the presence of police and attacked a party worker’s son with knives. In Tirupati, police allegedly stopped MP Dr M. Gurumoorthy from proposing a mayoral candidate while TDP workers ripped nomination documents. A woman candidate at MR Palli was reportedly assaulted and women’s clothing torn.

Reddy also said police booked Bhumana Karunakar Reddy and Abhinay instead of those he identified, and that the violence threatens the credibility of democratic elections. He called for an independent inquiry, impartial security and additional opportunities for affected candidates to file nominations.
