Hulu has ordered a series based on Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of “The X‑Files,” the outlet reported on Oct. 13, 2026.
What happened
The pilot, written and directed by Coogler, was picked up by Hulu in February and has now received a full‑series order. The show will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two contrasting FBI agents assigned to a long‑shuttered division that handles cases involving unexplained phenomena.
What the reports add
- Coogler will serve as an executive producer alongside showrunner Jennifer Yale, with Onyx Collective and 20th Television co‑producing with Coogler’s Proximity Media.
- Proximity Media co‑founders Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian are also executive producers, and original series creator Chris Carter joins them in that role.
- Simone Harris of Proximity Media, as well as Deadwyler and Patel, are listed as co‑executive producers.
- Ludwig Göransson contributed the score for the pilot, marking a collaboration across the Proximity family.
- Deadwyler and Patel will portray brand‑new characters rather than replacements for Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, according to a source cited by Variety.
- The reboot follows Coogler’s Oscar‑winning “Sinners,” which set a record with 16 nominations and won four awards, including screenplay and best actor.
What was said
“I’ve loved The X‑Files for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me,” Coogler told both outlets.
“What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world.”
“Danielle and Himesh, along with the rest of our cast, have brought such original perspectives and performances to these characters, and watching that come together has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.”
“We’re looking forward to continuing this journey as executive producers and especially excited to work closely with Jennifer Yale, Simone Harris, and the entire cast and crew as we bring this new chapter of The X‑Files to life,” said Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Ryan Coogler in a statement.
How it came about
Coogler, the Oscar‑winning filmmaker behind “Sinners,” has been developing the reboot for several years. The project joins other Hulu originals such as the limited series “Victoria,” which Felo covered on Sep. 23, 2026 (Diane Lane joins Hulu’s new limited series ‘Victoria’).
