UAE doctors warn fit adults in their 30s‑40s may still face hidden heart disease

Cardiologists in the UAE caution that regular exercise does not eliminate cardiovascular risk for people in their thirties and forties.

UAE cardiologists say that even people who exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight and play sport each week can still harbour serious heart disease without knowing it, according to Khaleej Times.

Dr Yogeeswari Vellore Satyanarayanan of Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital warned that “looking fit is not the same as being free of cardiovascular risk,” adding that high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol problems and inherited conditions may remain silent for years.

Dr Hesham Tayel, consultant cardiologist at International Modern Hospital, reported seeing more patients in their 30s and 40s with significant coronary artery disease despite normal weight and regular gym attendance. He described cases where patients presented with chest pain and were shocked to learn they had severe blockages requiring urgent treatment.

Both doctors highlighted risk factors such as family history, smoking or vaping, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic stress, poor sleep and inherited cholesterol disorders. Dr Tayel noted that routine cholesterol tests can miss elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp‑a) and that measuring ApoB or performing a coronary calcium scan can reveal early plaque build‑up.
