Doctors Warn of Foot Injuries Across Dance Styles

Orthopedic surgeons outline how different dance forms strain the plantar fascia and advise on proper shoes and gradual training.

By Felo News Desk · Published

Orthopedic specialists say that dancers of all styles face distinct foot‑stress risks, from barefoot rehearsals on hard floors to prolonged pointe work and even sneaker‑based routines.

What happened

Dr. Anup Khatri of Gleneagles Hospital in Mumbai explains that the foot bears the body’s full weight during standing, walking and dancing, making it vulnerable to repeated stress. He notes that long rehearsal hours, high‑impact jumps and the lack of cushioning on concrete can strain the plantar fascia, the tissue along the foot’s sole, leading to heel pain.

What the reports add

According to Dr. Neelabh, an orthopaedic surgeon at BLK‑Max Hospital, pointe shoes create a rigid platform that forces the dancer’s weight onto the forefoot, increasing pressure on toes, arches, ankles and the plantar fascia. He adds that poorly fitted or worn‑out sneakers, while offering cushioning, cannot fully eliminate stress from repetitive jumps.

What was said

"Foot is one of the most important and abused parts of the body, bearing the brunt of bodyweight during standing and walking. It is also the most neglected part of the body," Dr. Khatri told Deccan Chronicle. "We always buy stylish footwear, not bothering about its effect on our feet," he added.

Dr. Neelabh said, "Different forms of dance place very different demands on the feet. Pointe shoes can put considerable pressure on the toes and forefoot, while barefoot dancing requires the foot muscles and plantar fascia to absorb impact more directly from the floor." He also noted, "Sneakers can provide cushioning and shock absorption, but they cannot completely eliminate the stress caused by repetitive jumping, landing and prolonged rehearsals."
