In Damascus, a volunteer medical team from the United Arab Emirates performed Syria’s first pulmonary valve implantation using a Myval transcatheter heart valve, according to Gulf News.
What happened
The operation was conducted under Sharjah Charity International’s “Little Hearts” campaign, which aims to provide advanced cardiac treatment to children and patients with complex heart conditions in Syria. Led by Dr Ahmed Al Kamali, a consultant paediatric cardiologist at Al Qassimi Hospital for Women, Children and Maternity, the team completed 34 cardiac catheterisation procedures during the mission, including the historic valve implantation.
What the reports add
Gulf News notes that the catheter‑based approach avoids open‑heart surgery, reducing recovery time and surgical risk for patients with pulmonary valve narrowing, insufficiency or right‑ventricular outflow‑tract disorders. The article describes the Myval valve as the first of its kind used in Syria, expanding treatment options for patients who previously had limited access to such specialised care.
What was said
The report quotes Dr Al Kamali describing the procedure as “one of the most advanced interventional cardiology procedures available for treating selected cases of pulmonary valve narrowing, valve insufficiency and right ventricular outflow tract disorders.”
How it came about
The mission coincided with an official visit by a Sharjah Charity International delegation headed by Saeed Ghanem Al Suwaidi, member of the board of directors, along with Dr Musbah Saeed Al Kaabi and Ali Mohammed Al Rashidi, head of external projects and humanitarian assistance. The delegation’s visit was intended to assess humanitarian needs and strengthen partnerships with local Syrian institutions.
