Trump orders White House inquiry into Fed Governor Lisa Cook

The inquiry, set for a closed hearing, could affect the future of Cook's tenure on the Federal Reserve.

President Donald Trump has directed a White House inquiry into Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, according to a memo dated Oct. 7. The investigation will focus on alleged false statements linked to mortgage applications and will include a closed, in‑person hearing that could last up to four hours.

Cook’s legal team, led by Abbe Lowell and Norm Eisen, rejects the allegations and says a fair review will show she did not commit mortgage fraud. The memo notes the inquiry will examine the claims and consider whether further action, including removal, is justified.

Trump first sought to dismiss Cook in August 2025. Appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2022 and reappointed in 2023, Cook’s term runs until 2038. The Supreme Court previously ruled she may remain on the board while her legal challenge proceeds.
