President Trump’s administration is set to issue a nine‑month reprieve for Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar, which houses more than 1,000 Afghans who assisted the U.S. war effort or are relatives of U.S. service members, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the plan.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to sign a diplomatic note extending the camp’s operation beyond the scheduled closure on Wednesday, the end of the U.S. budget year.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press that the extension was decided just before the public announcement.
Rubio previously told Congress that the United States was still negotiating with third‑party countries to relocate the 1,039 Afghan interpreters and their families who have been stranded in Qatar for more than a year.
State Department officials declined to comment on the specific extension but reiterated their commitment to finding a “positive resolution” for the residents.
