A two‑year‑old boy was discovered dead at his home in Alappuzha, Kerala, on Sunday, police said. The Trikkunnapuzha police officer noted doctors described the child as "acutely anaemic" and weighing only 7.6 kg, well below the expected 12 kg for his age.
What happened
The child's father, an autorickshaw driver, found the body on Sunday morning. The mother was in a government medical college hospital in Vandanam giving birth to a newborn, leaving the father alone with the children. The family, which includes five other children, had previously been moved to a shelter home called Gandhibhavan but returned to their own house after causing problems there.
What the reports add
The police officer said a histopathology test will determine whether illness or malnutrition caused the death. An unnatural death case has been registered, and further action will depend on the test results. The child welfare committee has taken the remaining children into its care.
What was said
"A histopathology test will confirm whether the toddler’s condition and death were caused due to some illness or malnourishment," the officer told PTI.
How it came about
The family lives in poor conditions in Karthikappally; one of their children had died earlier. Their earlier relocation to a shelter home highlights ongoing concerns about child welfare in the region.
