Storm Adam, the first named storm of the 2026‑2027 season, battered eastern and southern Spain with heavy rain and strong winds, killing two women and prompting mass evacuations, Independent reported.
What happened
On Sunday night a 55‑year‑old woman drowned while swimming with a Dutch man at Almardà Beach in Sagunto, about 30 minutes from Valencia. The man escaped and called emergency services around 20:00. A coast‑guard search and a maritime rescue helicopter were deployed. The woman’s body was later recovered on the nearby Canes d’en Berenguer beach.
A second death occurred on Saturday when a 35‑year‑old woman was swept away by a river in Cabrera de Mar, north of Barcelona, while trying to cross with her children. Her partner saved their child but could not prevent her death; her body was found at a port near Barcelona, according to the local newspaper Sur.
What the reports add
The Independent noted that heavy showers have also flooded a car park in Ibiza and that the island endured a red‑level alert after 60 litres per square metre fell in one hour. The storm forced the closure of Ibiza’s main airport twice, caused roof leaks in the terminal, flooded airfields, cancelled 27 flights and diverted 16, and left many residents without electricity.
How it came about
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency had issued an amber weather warning for the Levante region and the Balearic Islands before the storm hit. The storm follows a recent period of severe wildfires across the country and comes after earlier fatalities in Catalonia from a “mini‑hurricane” earlier in the month.
