SpaceX speed caps on Starlink hinder Ukrainian drone operations

Ukrainian officials say SpaceX’s overnight speed restrictions on Starlink terminals slowed drone communications, affecting anti‑drone missions.

Ukraine’s military says SpaceX imposed overnight speed caps of 100 mph (160 km/h) on its Starlink terminals, limiting the performance of drones used against Russian Shahed attacks, according to a BBC report citing Ukrainian officials.

What happened

The speed limits were introduced overnight on a Tuesday, according to Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky. The caps affect terminals used by Ukrainian forces across land, air and naval units, slowing data transmission for drones, artillery and command posts.

What the reports add

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said the restrictions make it “all but useless” to intercept jet‑powered Russian drones, which can fly over 198 mph. ISW Director of Innovation George Barros told the BBC that the limits could have “major implications” because Starlink enables a real‑time sensor‑to‑shooter network. BBC Radio 4’s PM programme quoted electronic‑warfare expert Tom Whittington, who said the caps “effectively preclude” any device on the network from moving faster than 100 mph, hampering navigation in contested zones.

What was said

Barros described Starlink as “the backbone of military communications in Ukraine”. Whittington explained that the satellite system lets Ukraine move large volumes of data without ground infrastructure. Beskrestnov suggested the caps were not a coincidence and reflected “the latest strains between Kyiv and Washington”. The report also notes former US President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian strikes and his echoing of Elon Musk’s concerns.

How it came about

Starlink has been a key communications tool for Ukraine since the war began, enabling drone control and real‑time data sharing. Earlier Felo coverage (Ukraine blames SpaceX Starlink limits for disrupted military operations) reported similar complaints about the speed caps and their impact on missions in the Zaporizhzhia region.
