Senegal opened the continent’s first Youth Olympic Games on Saturday, Oct. 31, with an opening ceremony in Dakar that featured cultural performances and celebrity ambassadors.
What happened
Roughly 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 17 will compete in 153 medal events across 25 sports in Dakar, the nearby city of Diamniadio and the beach resort of Saly until Nov. 13, as reported by both Independent and France 24. The programme includes new Youth Olympic disciplines such as Baseball5, Wushu, coastal‑rower beach sprint and beach wrestling, the latter echoing Senegal’s traditional sand wrestling. A refugee contingent of six athletes from Kenya and Uganda will also take part in track and field, judo and taekwondo.
What the reports add
- The Games’ mascot, Ayo, is depicted as a young lion wearing a Fulani‑style hat; its name translates to “joy” in Yoruba.
- French actor Omar Sy, known for the Netflix series “Lupin,” and Senegalese‑Italian TikTok star Khaby Lame are serving as official ambassadors.
- President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is slated to declare the Games open at 6:30 p.m. local time (08:30 GMT) in the Diamniadio stadium, with International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry and several heads of state in attendance.
- Coventry, the IOC’s first African and female president, said on Tuesday that the moment marks a turning point for the continent.
- The event was originally planned for 2022 but was postponed for four years because of the COVID‑19 pandemic.
What was said
"This is a first opportunity for Senegal and, by extension, for Africa, to discover new sports," Thomas Dieme, a Senegalese student, told Independent.
He added that welcoming other peoples and cultures felt natural. The same remarks were echoed in France 24’s coverage.
"It is time for Africa, time for Senegal," IOC President Kirsty Coventry told reporters upon arriving in Dakar.
How it came about
The launch follows a broader push for African cities to host major international sport events, a trend highlighted in Felo’s earlier coverage of Nairobi winning the bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships (see article). Senegal’s successful bid underscores the continent’s growing role in global sport governance.
