Indian Army and Air Force veterans gathered in Hyderabad on Saturday to oppose the Secunderabad Cantonment Board's decision to shift the nearly 80‑year‑old World War II Memorial to make way for an elevated corridor, according to deccanchronicle.com.
All India Ex‑Servicemen Service Council ex‑president and former Colonel Sunkara Srinivasa Rao cited a board meeting on October 6 that approved moving the monument from GLR Survey No. 701 to GLR Survey No. 712. He noted that during a High Court hearing on October 5, the state government counsel assured there was no plan to demolish the memorial, yet records show the board approved relocation the following day.
Veterans described the pillar as a symbol of Secunderabad’s military heritage and suggested the corridor be built on vacant defence land near the Gymkhana grounds, opposite the memorial. Legal notices have been served to the board and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, and the veterans warned of further legal action if the shift proceeds.
