India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sandeep Bharat Mistry, a close aide of fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi, after his deportation from the United Arab Emirates, officials said on Tuesday.

Mistry, who was a director of Fire Star Hong Kong, is wanted in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. The CBI, in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, secured his return to India, where he arrived in Mumbai at 23:55 on September 28.

According to the report, Mistry acted as a key link between various entities, using self‑deleting communication platforms to conceal evidence. The charge sheet alleges he helped forge import‑export documents for fictitious trade in diamonds, gold and pearl jewellery, coerced dummy directors of foreign companies, and participated in siphoning funds from UAE‑based dummy company accounts.

The Interpol Red Notice against Mistry was issued in July 2026, leading to his geo‑location, arrest by UAE authorities and subsequent deportation within roughly two months.
