All five RAF Fairford suspects released on bail, analysts say evidence thin

Analysts say the bail of the suspects suggests UK authorities lacked solid proof of a terror plot at the US bomber base.

Five men in their 20s who were arrested on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences near RAF Fairford were released on bail on Monday, according to Al Jazeera. The arrests followed a resident’s report of three white vans blocking a driveway in a Gloucestershire village, prompting a major incident declaration and the evacuation of about 85 homes.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the suspects had been under surveillance for a long time, while UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged the public not to speculate. Iran’s embassy in London rejected any link to Tehran, calling such speculation "Iranophobia propaganda". US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed the incident involved a foreign actor but did not name a state.

Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera, including former head of the UK’s National Counter Terrorism Security Office Chris Phillips, said the bail suggests the UK government had little evidence of a genuine terrorist plot. Phillips noted that no explosives were found in the vans and compared the situation to the satirical film "Four Lions".
