Punjab chief minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif addressed participants of the Common Training Programme of the Sindh government on 17 October, saying public service demands timely decisions, professional integrity and the courage to take risks. She added that she remains unfazed by criticism, noting that every decision she makes can affect millions of lives.
Speaking about the province’s housing initiative, the chief minister cited the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar programme, which she said earned the UN‑Habitat Scroll of Honour in Muscat for rapid implementation and a sustainable, low‑cost model. According to her, more than 200,000 housing loans have been disbursed in the past 18 months and 125,000 houses have been completed, with a reported recovery rate of 99.9 percent and no defaults.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that public officials cannot waste time and must act with punctuality and efficiency. She urged civil servants to recognise their responsibility to a country that has invested in their education, identity and professional development, stating, “I proudly say that I am made in Pakistan, educated in Pakistan and live in Pakistan.” She warned that personal feelings should not influence professional decisions, especially in positions of authority.
The chief minister also highlighted merit as the guiding principle for appointing district police officers and deputy commissioners. She claimed to personally interview candidates for key posts and to resist political pressure or external recommendations. More than 100 schemes are reportedly under way in Punjab, and she described the relationship between the state and citizens as a “new social contract.”
Maryam Nawaz, who has never held an elected office before becoming chief minister, reflected on her political journey, noting that she worked hard to reach her current position. She urged citizens to place their trust in the government, promising that the state will reach out to people in need rather than forcing them to stand in queues or repeatedly approach offices.
