An armed police officer prevented a mass shooting at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, as worshippers gathered for Yom Kippur, Fox News reported.
According to the outlet, 29‑year‑old Sean Ward approached Constable Jeff Smith, shouted a hate‑motivated threat and fired a shotgun at the officer’s cruiser. Smith was hit multiple times but exited the vehicle and returned fire, killing Ward, who later died in hospital.
Smith remains hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body and is undergoing surgery, while his wife Ashley described the incident as “the scariest and darkest day of our lives.”
