Piner High students walk out after football captain’s Cornell‑7 Instagram post

The protest coincided with the football team forfeiting its next game due to a shortage of healthy linemen.

On Friday, over 200 students at Piner Junior Senior High School in Santa Rosa staged a walkout to protest an Instagram post by the football team captain that read “Free the Cornell 7,” a phrase linked to a 2024 gang‑rape case at Cornell University.

The demonstration came as the school’s football program forfeited its Saturday matchup against Archie Williams High School, citing only five healthy linemen available, according to head coach Adam Rosenstein.

An anonymous parent of a Piner cheerleader said the captain was barred from a team dinner but did not know of any further disciplinary action. The school’s full response remains unclear.
