Desert Ridge High School football coach Miles Smith reportedly resigned from his head‑coaching position, the New York Post said on Oct. 20. The move comes after Smith cut starting quarterback Gunner Brewer from the team following Brewer’s decision to change a play during the school’s 14‑12 win over Vail Cienega on Oct. 2.

Days later, 12 players walked out of a team meeting and were suspended for the remainder of the season. Brewer later supported his teammates in a game against Corona del Sol on Oct. 15. Smith’s father, former NFL head coach Lovie Smith, who had been serving as a volunteer assistant, is also leaving the coaching staff.
