Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell died of multi‑organ failure on 13 March, aged 64, after complications from multiple surgeries, a coroner ruled on Friday.

What happened

Campbell, born in Pontypridd, underwent two liver transplants and later bowel surgery at London’s Royal Free Hospital earlier this year. Although the second liver transplant succeeded, he was moved to intensive care after the bowel operation and deteriorated rapidly, dying in hospital.

What was said

Coroner Dr Richard Brittain said, “My view is that there is nothing here to suggest his death could have been prevented,” and described the cause as “recognised complications of necessary surgical procedures.”

Reactions

Motörhead posted an Instagram tribute calling Campbell a “wonderful guitarist, writer, performer and musician” and an “enormous beam of light.” The statement highlighted his humour, love of life and the loss felt by his family and bandmates.
