More than 1,200 people were arrested across France on Saturday, according to Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, as protests that began with students over the cost of living spiraled into violent confrontations, the mayor of Paris said.

What happened

Demonstrations started in the northern suburbs of Paris last month over school conditions and quickly expanded nationwide, targeting public buildings, luxury boutiques and supermarkets. On Saturday, police used tear gas and water cannon in Paris, and several structures were set on fire, including the town hall in Limoges, which the regional official described as "largely lost" to a blaze.

What the reports add

The Guardian reported that police in Paris alone detained a "record figure" of 855 people, the highest ever for a single event, as part of the national total of 1,200 arrests. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said the demonstrations had been hijacked by "casseurs" – opportunistic delinquents seeking to loot. Deputy Mayor Lamia El Aaraje described the level of violence in the capital as unprecedented.

What was said

Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire told reporters that whole streets in Paris "have been devastated". Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 150 police officers were injured in the clashes. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that the opportunistic delinquents would be dealt with firmly.

How it came about

Earlier coverage by Felo News noted that protests began in September at a high school in Créteil over staff shortages and quickly grew into a nationwide movement against inequality, weak public spending and rising living costs. The escalation on Saturday follows weeks of growing tension and earlier arrests reported in Felo articles on October 6 and 17.
